The Gold Standard of Smile Design

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin, custom-crafted shells of dental ceramic bonded to the front surfaces of your teeth. In a single treatment plan, they can correct the color, shape, size, and minor alignment of your smile — covering chips and cracks, closing small gaps, evening out short or worn teeth, and masking deep discoloration that whitening cannot fix. Many of our Korean-speaking patients know them as 라미네이트 (laminate veneers) — the same treatment, held to the same exacting standard of natural-looking results.

Because porcelain reflects light the way natural enamel does, a well-made veneer is indistinguishable from a healthy natural tooth. The difference between a smile that looks "done" and one that simply looks beautiful comes down to design — which is why every veneer case at ID Dental starts with a full digital smile design, not a shade guide and a guess.

Corrects chips, cracks, gaps, and deep stains
Reshapes uneven, short, or worn teeth
Stain-resistant, light-reflective dental porcelain
Custom-designed for your face, lips, and smile line
Typically completed in 2–3 visits
Two Approaches

No-Prep Veneers vs. Traditional Veneers

Both deliver a beautiful porcelain result — the difference is how much natural enamel is preserved. Dr. Nam will examine your teeth and tell you honestly which approach fits your case.

No-Prep Veneers

No-prep veneers are contact-lens-thin porcelain shells bonded directly over your natural teeth with little to no enamel removal. Because your tooth structure stays intact, the process is conservative, usually needs no anesthesia, and is often reversible. They are ideal for patients with small, worn, or slightly gapped teeth who want a brighter, fuller smile without reshaping.

Little to no enamel reduction
Usually no needles or numbing required
No temporary veneers needed
Conservative — preserves your natural teeth
Best for small, worn, or gapped teeth

Traditional Porcelain Veneers

Traditional veneers involve gently reshaping a thin layer of enamel — about the thickness of a fingernail — so the finished porcelain sits flush and looks completely natural. This approach gives Dr. Nam the most control over final shape and color, making it the better choice for significant discoloration, uneven or rotated teeth, and full smile makeovers.

Maximum control over shape and shade
Masks deep or tetracycline staining
Corrects more significant misalignment
Flush, natural emergence at the gumline
The standard for full smile makeovers

Digital Smile Design at ID Dental

We never design veneers by eye. Every case is planned digitally with CBCT 3D imaging and an intraoral scanner — so you preview your new smile before a single tooth is touched.

01

Scan & Imaging

A digital intraoral scanner captures your teeth in minutes — no messy impressions — while CBCT 3D imaging lets Dr. Nam evaluate the health of every tooth and root before designing.

02

Smile Design Preview

Dr. Nam designs your veneers digitally around your face, lips, and smile line, then shows you a preview of the projected result. You approve the design before treatment begins.

03

Preparation & Temporaries

If your case calls for traditional veneers, teeth are gently prepared under local anesthesia and fitted with temporaries. No-prep cases often skip this step entirely.

04

Bonding & Final Polish

Your custom porcelain veneers are precisely bonded, the bite is balanced, and the porcelain is polished to a natural, light-reflective finish.

Why Los Angeles Trusts Dr. Nam With Their Smiles

Veneers are as much art as dentistry — porcelain that is even half a millimeter too bulky or a half-shade too bright reads as fake. Dr. Edward Nam, DDS, trained at the USC dental school and completed advanced implant certification at Harvard, and has designed and placed veneers across thousands of cosmetic cases. He personally handles every step of your smile design, from the first scan to the final polish.

Our Koreatown practice serves patients in both English and Korean, so you can discuss the details of your smile — shape, translucency, brightness, how much "pop" you want — in whichever language is most comfortable. And because we photograph and publish our own results, you can judge our work in the before & after gallery before you ever sit in the chair.

USC-trained, Harvard implant certification

Advanced training in both the surgical and cosmetic sides of dentistry — your whole smile is planned, not just the front teeth.

Thousands of cosmetic cases

Experience across every type of case: single chipped teeth, tetracycline staining, gaps, worn smiles, and full makeovers.

Bilingual English / Korean care

Every detail of your treatment explained clearly, in your language, at every visit.

Are You a Candidate for Veneers?

Most adults with healthy teeth and gums are excellent candidates. Veneers may be right for you if you have:

Chipped, cracked, or worn front teeth
Deep stains that whitening can't lift
Small gaps or slightly uneven teeth
Teeth that look short or undersized
A smile you hide in photos

Active gum disease, untreated decay, or heavy grinding need to be addressed first — and significantly crooked teeth may benefit from orthodontic treatment before or instead of veneers. Dr. Nam will map the honest path to your best smile, whether that is veneers, whitening or crowns, or a combination.

Built to Last

Caring for Your Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a long-term investment in your smile — with proper care, they routinely last 10 to 15 years, and many patients keep theirs well beyond that. The good news is that caring for veneers looks almost exactly like caring for natural teeth: brush twice a day with a non-abrasive toothpaste, floss daily, and keep your regular hygiene visits so we can monitor the bonding and your gum health.

A few habits make the biggest difference. If you clench or grind at night, a custom nightguard protects the porcelain the same way it protects enamel. Avoid using your teeth as tools — opening packages or biting nails puts point pressure a veneer was never designed for. And because porcelain resists stain far better than natural enamel, your veneers will keep their shade for years; if you ever whiten your surrounding natural teeth, we simply re-match everything so your smile stays seamless. At every checkup, Dr. Nam inspects each veneer's margins and bonding, so small issues are caught long before they become problems.

Porcelain Veneer FAQs

Does getting veneers hurt?

No — veneer treatment is comfortable for the vast majority of patients. For traditional veneers, the tooth is numbed with local anesthesia before any enamel is reshaped, so you feel pressure at most. No-prep veneers often require no anesthesia at all because little to no enamel is removed. Some patients notice mild sensitivity to hot or cold for a few days after placement, which fades as the teeth settle.

How many visits does veneer treatment take?

Most veneer cases at ID Dental are completed in two to three visits. The first visit covers your exam, digital scans, and smile design. At the second visit, the teeth are prepared (if needed) and temporary veneers are placed while a dental lab crafts your final porcelain. At the final visit, Dr. Nam bonds the finished veneers and fine-tunes your bite. Start to finish, the process typically takes two to three weeks.

How long do porcelain veneers last?

With good home care and regular checkups, porcelain veneers typically last 10 to 15 years, and many last longer. Longevity depends on your bite, habits like grinding or nail-biting, and how consistently you brush, floss, and keep hygiene visits. Wearing a nightguard if you grind your teeth is the single best way to extend the life of your veneers.

Do veneers stain like natural teeth?

Porcelain is glazed and non-porous, so veneers resist coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco stains far better than natural enamel. They will not respond to whitening treatments, however, so if you plan to whiten your natural teeth, it is best to do so before your veneers are made — the porcelain shade is matched to your surrounding teeth at the design stage.

What is the difference between veneers and crowns?

A veneer is a thin porcelain shell bonded to the front surface of a tooth, preserving most of your natural tooth structure — it is primarily a cosmetic solution for shape, color, and minor alignment concerns. A crown covers the entire tooth and is used when a tooth is structurally weakened by large fillings, fractures, or root canal treatment. During your exam, Dr. Nam will tell you honestly which option protects your tooth best.
